Off-the-shelf software is cheap at first but forces you to work its way. Custom software works your way.
Every business reaches a point where Excel and ready-made programs are not enough: invoices are made by hand, orders get lost in WhatsApp, and nobody knows how much stock there is. The question is: off-the-shelf program or software built for you?
Off-the-shelf software
- Starts fast and costs little per month
- Has features for everyone, so many of them you never use
- Forces you to work the way the vendor imagined
- Data lives on someone else's servers and the subscription never ends
Custom software
- Built exactly for how you work: invoicing, customers, orders, reports
- Higher initial cost, but no permanent subscriptions
- Data on your own server, under your control
- Grows with the business: a new module, not a new program
How to decide
If your work is standard and a ready-made program covers 90% of it, use it. If you lose time every day tricking programs into working like you do, custom software pays for itself within a year.
An example from our work: a simple invoicing system with PDF, email delivery and monthly reports, built for a printing company, replaced three programs and hours of work every week.
